Lions Mane

Hericium Erinaceus more commonly know as Lions Mane is a large white mushroom with long tendrils that resemble a lions mane as they grow.  These unusual-looking mushrooms are found on rotting hardwood trees and logs such as Oak throughout the northern hemisphere and are native to Asia, Europe and North America.  You can also spot Lions Mane in the UK, but they are one of 4 fungi on the protected species list.

Lions Mane mushrooms are edible as well as medicinal with a variety of health benefits.  This is the reason we at The Mushroom Coffee Company have chosen Lions Mane as one of our coffee infused ingredients.

Benefits of the the Lions Mane mushroom include :

  • Can be beneficial for certain cancers
  • Reduces inflammation and oxidative stress

A study in 2010 of rats fed with a high fat diet and given daily doses of lions mane extract showed a 27% lower triglyceride levels and 42% less weight gain after just 28 days!  Since obesity and high triglycerides are both considered risk factors for heart disease, this is one way that lions mane mushrooms can contribute to heart health.

Test tube studies have also found that lions mane extract can help prevent the oxidisation of cholesterol in the bloodstream.

A 2013 study carried out on mice with colon cancer found that taking lions mane extract reduced the spread of the disease to the lungs by 69%, and a 2014 study concluded that lions mane extract was more effective than traditional cancer medications at slowing tumour growth in mice as well as having fewer side effects.

Our lions mane coffee contains both the beneficial fruiting body and mycelium.
